Atheism, by necessity, has a limited popular life cycle. Civilizations don’t survive by grounding “moral” behavior in definitions that are transient. When civil structures detach from transcendent principles, the tyranny of the majority fills the vacuum of guiding conscience. Instead of principled cultural dialogue, propaganda and suppression are left to be touted as progress. The human spirit becomes too fickle and degraded for true individualism to thrive in uncoerced benevolence toward its fellow man. “Love your neighbor” becomes a chore best handed off to government as diversity of self-assertion escalates a focus on rights instead of sacrificial service. The Golden Rule gets 86’d because we no longer understand what is best for ourselves.
Atheism emerges collectively in human reasoning in pockets of time where circumstances afford illusion about human invulnerability. But truthfully, we are no match for the forces of nature and relationship. Neither are we a match for the surrogate god of expanding government with its insatiable appetite for power. For a time, political language can be divorced from moral imperatives or suffice as its only basis. But this lasts only until scarcity revisits liberty and resources. The luxury of blurring moral cause and effect necessarily ends when self-inflicted civil trauma reforges a coalescence around transcendent truth.
Material and political consensus alone cannot permanently prop atheism up, because atheism is the religion of self as god. In aggregate, the result is government as god. In self-assertion alone, there is only self and what self decides to submit to in contract for received benefits. A hundred million selves trying to be god results in no civil structure able to rule effectively for long. Violence increases symptomatically and exponentially. Innocence is demonized for its sacrificial requirements. Peace is confined to a few generations coasting on the greased skid of previously implemented ideas that few were previously short-sighted enough to challenge. Eventually, the threshold of civility is fully breached, and inadequate agreement remains for the substance of tranquility. The difficulty and violence of existence must eventually force people to turn back to consideration of God when circumstances are revealed to be undeniably beyond human control. In other words:
The road down atheism is the road to ruin and misery. Feet become swift to shed blood, the way of peace disappears from human understanding, the venom of asps underfills lips and mouthes become full of curses and bitterness toward one another. Tongues are used to deceive until throats become an open grave. Atheism, given time, makes people worthless with respect to doing true good and requires good be defined as mere expression. When no one seeks for God, there is no righteousness, and no understanding. -Romans 3 extrapolation
Jesus Christ shattered the self-as-god delusion. The message of required redemption and self-sacrificial love in the cross of Christ is relevant brutality for a blood-thirsty species bent on proving worth its own way from behind a guilty conscience. Many arrive at atheism influenced by presuppositional science, the irrational leap from observation of effect to negation of causal requirements. But the flow of history itself proves such judgement a myopic indulgence.
